As we recently discovered at our annual planning meeting, the Curio team knows that we have a lot going for us, competitive-advantage wise. We also realized that we like tooting our own horn as much as other people like to hear the sound of someone else tooting (…sorry).
So here’s the challenge, then: What if you want to impart a lot of information to your most important audiences, even in a crowded information marketplace?
The answer, according to our one-track hive-mind, is obvious:
With an custom illustrated infographic!
“If we have to self-promote,” says Amanda (Curio’s Artistic Director), “then we want to play to our strengths. We’re illustrators as well as designers, so we wanted to make a promo piece that was artful, functional, and easy on the eyes.”
The process of creating the “Why Work with Curio” infographic was, like all Curio work, a full-team effort: First, Matt (communications manager) wrote up a list of Curio’s key differentiators, then rewrote them, rewrote again, and presented them to Amanda.
Words Guy meets Illustration Lady
Amanda, who had to practice rapid ideation for the past two decades in the name of keeping the lights on, took Matt’s written content and immediately started sketching out ideas.
“My process here was to make a lot of little lists and then research ideas for visual metaphors to accompany the text,” explains Amanda. “Infographics are especially challenging, since there’s lots of different images and text—the challenge is how to make it fit like a puzzle, retain all the important information, but still be visually-appealing.”

Finally, once Amanda’s first proof was ready, it was presented to Graham and Jayden (the rest of the creative team), who critiqued and fine-tuned the piece until it was deemed to be up to Curio standard.
“In all, I think we took two days to turn this around,” said Amanda. “I still get real itchy about self-promotion, but this was a fun exercise, and I think the final product is a good distillation of what makes a Curio illustration and design product unique.”
