Watershed Health Transcends Time

Watersheds don’t tend to get a lot of press. This is unfortunate, given the outsized role they play in natural conservation.

A watershed is a geographical area in which all the water flows downhill into a river or lake; mapping watersheds allows experts to predict an area’s water availability, its biodiversity, and its adaptability to climate change.

To build awareness, Edmonton’s North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance (NWSA) recruited its first Youth Water Council in 2024 and challenged them to find the best way to teach others the importance of watersheds.

And the nine student members of the Council (bless them) decided to make a comic book.

“They found me on Instagram, and they liked my illustrative style,” says Amanda Schutz. “Social media worked as it should, for the first time ever!”

Over several of Curio’s busiest months, Amanda painstakingly crafted each panel. “[The Council] were fantastic to work with,” she shares. “They’ve all got that inspired and fearless creativity that gets hammered out of us as adults.”

The result of these labours was a ten-page comic telling the story of two siblings on a journey back in time to discover the importance of watershed health and respecting our rivers.
